Exercise is critical to weight loss, especially if you are alternate day fasting. I thought it best to address my exercise routine and why I do it.

CARDIO

The cardio aspect of the exercise routine ensures that calories are being burnt by raising your heart rate and effort level.

My cardio is on an elliptical machine. It’s low impact on your knees and can help both the upper and lower body. I do 30 minutes on the elliptical 5 times a week. I average 500 calories expended based on the readout on the machine.

WALKING

I like to give my body a break on the weekends, so I typically walk a couple of miles on Saturday and Sunday. Maybe a 30 minute mile pace, but no faster. I typically expend 200 calories on these days.

WEIGHT LIFTING

This is the key to any exercise routine. Weight lifting builds and tones muscle, which means your metabolism increases to meet the new demands. The benefit is that the extra energy is expended all throughout the day.

I use free weights and typically work with dumbbells. The machines are ok, but I don’t think they let your entire muscle system participate in the workout.

As we get further into the year I’ll explain more about all the parts.
